A beautiful, old, hand made Batik from Banyumas in Central Java. Tuli is the Indonesian word used to describe a batik that is totally handmade by "kanting" (pouring) the wax onto the material. It is not made by stamp or by mechanically printing onto the material. This is the traditional and most labour intensive way of making a batik.
This batik is a particularly good quality batik, made from all natural dyes and has been very finely worked. The background is cream and brown wavy stripes, called "galaran mencong" and is meant to represent woven bamboo mats. The floral motifs are very wekk made, in dark brown, dark blue and white. It is in very good condition on lovely soft cotton.
A Kain is a piece of material about 2 or a bit more metres in length. This one is 106cm high by 252cm long.
